Position Statements.
The things The Liminal Clinic will and won't do, written down so you can hold us to them. These are the clinic's formal positions (TLCGOV003, v1.1) in plain language.
Identity is not something to fix.
1. Identity change and suppression practices
The Liminal Clinic condemns all practices aimed at changing, suppressing or denying a person's core identity — their sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression or neurotype. These practices are harmful, unethical, unsupported by evidence, and contrary to our affirming, inclusive, evidence-based and person-centred care.
2. Gender and sexuality conversion practices
We denounce "conversion" or "reparative" therapies targeting LGBTQIA+ people. Major health and psychological associations have documented the harm they cause, including depression, anxiety, self-hatred and suicidal ideation (Amnesty International: what are conversion practices?).
Our position aligns with the Change or Suppression (Conversion) Practices Prohibition Act 2021 (Vic), which prohibits these practices, and with the Australian Psychological Society's position.
Neurodivergence is a way of being, not a deficit.
3. Affirming neurodivergent people
We affirm the inherent value of neurodivergent identities, such as autism and ADHD, and reject harmful demands for conformity.
We oppose interventions designed to eliminate or mask authentic autistic traits, such as stimming or special interests, unless the behaviour causes harm to self or others.
Our services support self-understanding and acceptance, advocacy for appropriate accommodations, and positive identity formation.
4. Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA)
The Liminal Clinic does not support the use of Applied Behaviour Analysis. ABA often prioritises compliance and conformity over a person's autonomy, wellbeing and authentic neurodivergent expression, and has been widely criticised for suppressing natural neurodivergent behaviours, with documented negative mental health outcomes, loss of self-esteem and reduced agency.
We instead endorse therapeutic approaches grounded in respect, acceptance, understanding and empowerment — supporting growth without coercion.
Who this clinic is for.
5. Intersectionality
Marginalised identities often intersect, compounding stigma and discrimination. We recognise the unique experiences and therapeutic needs of people with multiple intersecting identities — racial, cultural, disability and more.
6. Trauma-informed care
We prioritise safety, trust, collaboration, choice and empowerment. You control the disclosure and discussion of your traumatic experiences.
7. Inclusivity
We welcome and support people of all backgrounds, genders, sexual orientations, religions, cultures and abilities, and actively reject discrimination and stigma.
Country, culture and safety.
8. First Nations acknowledgement and cultural safety
The Liminal Clinic acknowledges the enduring connection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to the lands on which we operate. We recognise them as the Traditional Owners and custodians of these lands and pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging. This acknowledgement is a cornerstone of our practice.
We are committed to culturally safe, responsive and aware services, through ongoing learning, reflection and adaptation — so that the diverse cultural needs and perspectives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are respected and valued, and everyone feels safe, understood and empowered in their care.
We work in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to foster health equity and wellbeing. See also our page for Sistergirls and Brotherboys.
People decide, not machines.
9. AI transparency
We occasionally use AI-supported tools, responsibly and ethically, to improve administrative efficiency and provide insights. Our Privacy Policy names each tool, what it does, and how to decline it.
All psychological services, assessments, interventions and therapeutic decisions remain solely under the professional judgement and oversight of qualified human practitioners. AI will never replace human empathy, understanding or ethical judgement in our therapeutic practice.
10. Our commitment and your feedback
We are dedicated to affirming, respectful environments and to advocating against discrimination and harmful practices. We uphold every person's right to dignity, authenticity and holistic wellbeing.
We welcome feedback from clients and the wider community on these statements and our clinic policies — email hello@liminalclinic.com.au.
